KARACHI: The opposition staged a protest inside the Sindh Assembly on Tuesday, holding aloft the photograph of three‑year‑old Ibrahim, whose death has triggered public anger over the city’s unsafe streets. The uproar began when the opposition leader was not allowed to speak on the incident, prompting lawmakers to shout slogans across the chamber. Members of the MQM eventually walked out in protest.
Rehan Bandukda submitted a call‑attention notice as the atmosphere grew increasingly tense. Speaking with visible emotion, one lawmaker said the child’s life had ended “within moments”, adding that the tragedy was a collective failure. He told the House that in Karachi, dumpers and other heavy vehicles “wipe out entire families”, and yet little had changed to prevent avoidable deaths.
MQM’s Iftikhar Alam launched a scathing attack on the Sindh government, asking how long the city’s children would continue to fall into open drains. He said the government had repeatedly failed to address hazards that were, in his words, an open invitation to death. The child’s body, he reminded the House, was recovered 14 hours after the incident.
Lawmakers demanded that the provincial government present a clear explanation and set out measures to prevent further tragedies, warning that public trust was eroding as preventable accidents continued to claim young lives.
