HARIPUR: The district administration in Haripur ordered electricity supplies to Afghan refugee camps to be disconnected, marking a new phase in the government’s push to remove undocumented migrants from the area.
Officials said operations had begun across the district to facilitate the departure of Afghan families who did not possess legal documents. As part of the effort, authorities directed the Hazara Electric Supply Company to dismantle power infrastructure inside the camps. Teams began removing transformers and electricity meters from several sites on Monday, a move that effectively cut off power to thousands of residents.
Local officials said nearly 20 Afghan refugee camps were functioning in Haripur, some of them for decades. They added that action would also be taken against residents who continued to provide accommodation to undocumented Afghans in violation of government directives.
The latest steps formed part of a broader nationwide campaign that has prompted concerns among rights groups, who argue that sudden disconnections and eviction notices risk pushing vulnerable families into deeper hardship as winter sets in.
