TEHRAN: Spain reopened its embassy in Tehran after a temporary closure prompted by escalating regional tensions, signalling a renewed effort to restore diplomatic engagement with Iran and support ongoing peace initiatives.
The decision followed an earlier announcement by Spain’s Foreign Minister, José Manuel Albares, who said Madrid had instructed its ambassador to return to Tehran and resume full diplomatic operations. He said Spain intended to play a constructive role in promoting dialogue and stability in the region through all available channels.
The embassy had been closed after Spain withdrew its diplomatic staff due to security concerns linked to rising tensions involving the United States and its regional posture. The reopening now indicated that conditions were seen as stable enough to allow a diplomatic presence to resume.
Officials said the move was part of a broader European effort to maintain communication with Iran at a time of heightened uncertainty, particularly as indirect contacts and negotiations continued over regional security and nuclear-related issues.
Diplomatic observers viewed Spain’s return as a cautious but meaningful step towards rebuilding engagement, with embassies playing a key role in facilitating dialogue, monitoring developments and supporting nationals abroad.
