SUKKUR: The Director General of the Sindh Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA), Waqar Ahmed Phulpoto, discussed potential avenues for technical assistance with the Australian Consul General in Karachi, with talks focusing on the use of artificial intelligence for air quality monitoring, water stewardship and biogas technology as sustainable environmental solutions.

Phulpoto, an Australia Awards alumnus, raised the issues while attending an alumni dinner organised under the Australia Awards Programme at a local hotel in Karachi.

During the meeting, he discussed how artificial intelligence could strengthen real-time air quality monitoring across Sindh by improving the collection and analysis of environmental data. He said the technology had the potential to support faster and more informed decision-making, allowing authorities to respond more effectively to pollution and other environmental challenges.
The discussion also centred on water stewardship, with both sides exchanging views on improving the management of water resources through modern technologies and sustainable practices. Phulpoto highlighted the need to adopt innovative solutions to protect water supplies and strengthen long-term environmental resilience.
Biogas technology also featured prominently in the talks. He said it could provide a sustainable alternative for meeting energy demands while addressing waste management challenges. The technology, he added, could contribute to cleaner energy production, reduce pollution and support environmentally responsible development across Sindh.
The Australian Consul General welcomed SEPA’s environmental initiatives and discussed opportunities to expand cooperation between Australian institutions and Sindh government departments through capacity building, technical assistance and technology transfer.
Both sides agreed to explore joint programmes under existing bilateral frameworks, reflecting a shared commitment to advancing sustainable development goals and strengthening environmental protection through innovation, knowledge sharing and international collaboration.
