ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Peoples Party chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari described the joint defence agreement between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkey as a historic development and a major milestone in the country’s history.

In a statement, Bilawal said the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement would strengthen Pakistan’s defence capabilities and create a new framework for closer security cooperation among the three countries. He described the agreement as a guarantee of a secure future for Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkey.
Bilawal praised Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir for their role in making the agreement possible. He said their efforts had helped turn the shared commitment of the three countries into a formal defence arrangement.

The agreement was signed in Mecca on Friday by Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif during a summit in the Saudi city.
The pact was aimed at expanding and strengthening defence cooperation across multiple areas. Its central provision stated that an armed attack against any one of the three countries would be treated as an attack against all three.
The collective defence provision gave the agreement a significant strategic dimension. It established a formal commitment among the three states to respond collectively in the event of an armed attack against any member.
Bilawal said the agreement would contribute to Pakistan’s security while also strengthening cooperation with two important regional partners. He expressed the hope that closer cooperation among the three countries would contribute to greater stability in a region facing complex security challenges.
