ISLAMABAD: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has called on Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to clarify whether recent remarks by Defence Minister Khawaja Asif on Kashmir reflect the federal government’s official policy, and has demanded the minister’s removal from the cabinet.
Addressing a public gathering in Dadyal, Bilawal said those responsible for unrest in Azad Kashmir should be held accountable individually, rather than imposing hardship on the wider population. “If some people have committed wrongdoing, they should face the consequences. The entire region should not be punished for the actions of a few,” he said.
Bilawal urged both the government and protesters to ensure that ordinary Kashmiris were not affected by the ongoing political dispute. He also proposed the establishment of a Truth and Reconciliation Commission, saying it could provide a peaceful framework for resolving differences.
He said he had written to protest leaders with the proposal and suggested that demonstrations could be suspended while the commission carried out its work. He added that prolonged protests disrupting the supply of essential goods ultimately harmed the public, while maintaining that it remained the government’s responsibility to uphold law and order.
The PPP chairman described the upcoming elections in Azad Kashmir as a significant political test and said elected representatives should work to strengthen the link between the people of Kashmir and the federal government.
Bilawal reiterated his party’s support for greater political and constitutional rights for the people of Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, arguing that constitutional reforms should be achieved through parliamentary consultation rather than confrontation.
