MUZAFFARABAD: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has described the situation in Kashmir as concerning, calling for the dispute to be resolved through peaceful means and proposing the establishment of a truth commission to bring the facts surrounding the conflict to light.
Bilawal said elections in Azad Jammu and Kashmir should be as free and transparent as those held in Pakistan. He added that he had previously put forward proposals aimed at improving the transparency of the electoral process and criticized restrictions on internet access across the territory.
He said he wanted Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to succeed, adding that the premier faced challenges at the federal level. Bilawal said he would continue to offer constructive suggestions as a political ally.
The PPP chairman also criticized recent remarks by a federal minister about the people of Kashmir, describing the comments as inappropriate. He said public office holders should exercise responsibility in their language, and urged the minister either to withdraw the remarks and apologize or resign if they wished to stand by them.
Bilawal stressed that his criticism was directed at the minister’s comments rather than individuals, saying public officials should be prepared to face legitimate scrutiny.
He also said remarks made by Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman had created an unfavorable impression and expressed hope that the veteran politician would reconsider his statement.
Commenting on the federal government’s performance, Bilawal said it had achieved progress in some areas but that considerable room for improvement remained. He added that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif appeared to be making a sincere effort to address the country’s challenges.
