QUETTA: The Brahui Academy Pakistan held a literary seminar in Quetta to mark the first death anniversary of acclaimed poet, researcher, writer and scholar Johar Brohi, with writers, poets and academics from Balochistan and Sindh gathering to celebrate his literary legacy.
The event was chaired by Professor Dr Sosan Brahui, Chairman of Brahui Academy Pakistan, while former Central Joint Secretary of Sindhi Adabi Sangat, writer and researcher Azad Anwar Kandhro, attended as the chief guest.
Among the guests of honour were Nadeem Brohi, Sultan Ahmed Shahwani, Zahid Brahui, Dr Abdul Qayyum Bedar, Ahmed Baig Hazarvi, Agha Gul and Professor Afzal Gul.
A highlight of the seminar was the launch of five books, including Kani Aan Pad, Gureech Ti Shakar Phul, Kachhi Sindh Na Sail Sawad, Sangat Johar Brohi Number and the poetry collection Baak Ji Saakh, published by the Mehar branch of Sindhi Adabi Sangat.
Addressing the gathering, Professor Dr Sosan Brahui announced that 2026 would be observed as the “Year of Johar Brohi” in recognition of the scholar’s lasting contribution to Brahui literature. He said the publication of Johar Brohi’s works was a matter of pride for the academy, adding that the late writer had played a pivotal role in advancing Brahui literature and carrying forward the literary vision of Allama Noor Muhammad Parwani.
Chief guest Azad Anwar Kandhro described Johar Brohi as a distinguished literary figure whose work strengthened cultural and literary ties between Sindh and Balochistan. He said Brohi made significant contributions to both Sindhi and Brahui literature and deserved recognition as a poet of both languages.
Nadeem Brohi paid tribute to the late scholar, describing him as a prolific poet who wrote in Brahui, Sindhi, Urdu, Persian and Arabic. He thanked the academy for preserving and publishing his remaining literary works.
Brahui Academy General Secretary Sultan Ahmed Shahwani said Johar Brohi had devoted his life to promoting Brahui and Sindhi languages and literature, while Central Finance Secretary Zahid Brahui praised his book Gureech Ti Shakar Phul as an important contribution to Brahui prose and creative writing.
Regional Director of the Academy of Letters Dr Abdul Qayyum Bedar described Johar Brohi as a literary mentor and highlighted his translation of the poetry of Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai into the Brahui language. He said the late scholar was widely regarded as one of the leading Sufi poets in modern Brahui literature.
The seminar concluded with scholars presenting research papers, poets reciting tributes and participants sharing reflections on Johar Brohi’s literary achievements. Awards, commemorative shields, shawls and books were presented to contributors in recognition of their services to literature.
