KARACHI: Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi has expressed disappointment over the state of Karachi, saying it was embarrassing to see the condition of a city that generates billions of rupees in business and provides employment to millions of people.
Speaking on a podcast hosted by former Test cricketer Fawad Alam, Afridi described his decision to leave Karachi and move to Islamabad as a difficult one.
Afridi said Karachi was home to many good people and that he had spent some of the best years of his life in the city. However, he praised Islamabad’s infrastructure and weather, saying living there had proved a better experience for him.
“I don’t miss Karachi, but I really miss the people of Karachi,” he said.
The former captain voiced concern over Karachi’s deteriorating infrastructure and said the condition of a city that played such an important role in Pakistan’s economy was deeply disappointing. Afridi also reacted to comparisons between Karachi and Paris, saying he found it amusing when people described the city as “Paris” or used similar labels.
He acknowledged that some development projects had improved parts of Karachi’s infrastructure but said much more needed to be done to meet the city’s growing needs. Afridi described Bhutto Highway as a well-built project but said a single development scheme could not be used to satisfy the city’s residents or address its wider infrastructure problems.
During the podcast, Afridi was also asked about whether he intended to enter politics.
The former captain said he had considered entering politics in the past but changed his mind in 2019.
“Politics is not my job,” he said.
