NEW YORK: US envoy to the United Nations Mike Waltz has claimed that China has started distancing itself from Iran following President Donald Trump’s recent visit to Beijing.
Speaking on the matter, Waltz said China had agreed that Iran should not develop nuclear weapons and that no toll tax should be imposed on ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
He added that the shift in China’s stance reflects growing alignment with US concerns over regional security and global trade routes.
Earlier, in an interview with a US television channel, President Trump had said China would not supply military equipment to Iran and wanted to keep the Strait of Hormuz open for international shipping.
Trump also stated that Chinese President Xi Jinping had offered assistance in ensuring the waterway remains accessible.
