BEIJING: A 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck China’s southwestern Guangxi region, killing two people and causing widespread damage, according to state media reports.
Chinese official media said the quake hit the Liunan district of Liuzhou city, with a shallow depth of around 8 kilometres, increasing its impact on surface structures.
Authorities confirmed that 13 buildings collapsed following the tremors, while several houses were also damaged in the affected area. Emergency response teams have been deployed to carry out rescue operations.
One person remains missing as search and relief efforts continue in the quake-hit region. Officials are assessing the extent of damage to infrastructure and residential areas.
Local authorities said the situation is under control but warned that aftershocks cannot be ruled out. Residents have been advised to remain cautious and follow safety instructions.
