LAHORE: Pakistani religious scholar and preacher Maulana Tariq Jameel has said that the growing trend of women not cooking at home could have implications not only for health but also for family and social life.
Tariq Jameel made the remarks during a recent podcast in which he discussed lifestyle, food and health. He was asked about the increasing tendency among women to rely less on home-cooked meals.
Responding to the question, he described the trend as “unnatural” and said he believed food and lifestyle could influence people’s behaviour.
Recalling a visit to the United States in 1998, Tariq Jameel said a doctor had shown him figures indicating that $1 trillion had been spent on depression medicines in North America in a single year. He said that if the situation was already serious at the time, it was likely to have increased further since then.
He argued that what he described as artificial and unhealthy food could affect human behaviour. According to him, excessive consumption of fast food could contribute to mood swings, increased anger and reduced tolerance, which he said could also affect relationships between husbands and wives and contribute to domestic conflicts.
Tariq Jameel also said unhealthy diets could affect energy, physical strength and overall wellbeing. He advised people to eat traditional food and reduce their consumption of junk food and cooking oil, while recommending desi ghee as an alternative.
He said that if household kitchens had effectively become inactive, it could contribute to health problems and also increase dependence on medical treatment.
The religious scholar also criticised the consumption of bakery products and different types of bread, describing them as potentially unhealthy.
While discussing the issue, Tariq Jameel presented his views on the relationship between diet, lifestyle and behaviour. The specific health effects of individual foods, however, can vary according to overall diet, quantities consumed and individual health conditions.
