QUETTA: Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman has said Pakistan needs a national policy to address its challenges, while any proposal to create additional provinces must take into account the country’s existing structure and capacity.
Addressing a press conference in Quetta, Fazlur Rehman said creating new provinces was not inherently wrong, but it was not an easy process and the country’s ability to sustain such changes had to be considered.

Commenting on Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi’s remarks on changes to the system, the JUI-F chief said Naqvi could not make such statements without consulting Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
Fazlur Rehman said new issues were often raised to divert public attention from the country’s actual problems. He urged Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party chief Mahmood Khan Achakzai to convene a meeting of the joint opposition to discuss the situation.
“If he does not call the meeting, we will convene one at the national level,” he said, adding that democracy could not flourish if governments were formed according to the wishes of certain individuals or groups.
The JUI-F chief said democracy was weak in the country and parliament had also been weakened. He stressed that Pakistan needed to be governed according to the Constitution, adding that people were increasingly concerned about the prevailing situation.
Fazlur Rehman said the country needed a national and justice-based policy and reiterated that his party had decided not to join the Balochistan government.
He also claimed that the JUI-F was the country’s largest political force and an important political movement. Asked about reports regarding the possible appointment of Dr Abdul Malik Baloch as Balochistan chief minister, he said he had no information about it.
