KARACHI: Sindh Governor Syed Muhammad Nihal Hashmi and Federal Minister for Climate Change Senator Dr Musadik Malik agreed to launch a province-wide urban forest initiative and a special tree plantation campaign to tackle environmental challenges and promote greener cities.
The decision was taken during a meeting between the two leaders, where they discussed ways to expand green spaces, improve the urban environment and strengthen climate action across Sindh. Both sides agreed on introducing the Sindh-wide Urban Forest Green Initiative, aimed at increasing tree cover and creating healthier surroundings for citizens.
The meeting also discussed a proposal to establish urban forests and green corridors along railway tracks in Karachi. The plan was viewed as an important step towards transforming neglected urban spaces into green areas while addressing rising temperatures and environmental pressures faced by the city.
Governor Hashmi said cooperation between federal and provincial authorities was necessary to deal with the growing impact of climate change. He said environmental protection could not be achieved without public participation and collective efforts.
He added that Independence Day celebrations at Governor House Karachi had already begun with a tree plantation campaign. The initiative would involve young people, students, educational institutions and civil society organizations to create wider awareness about environmental responsibility.
Federal Minister Dr Musadik Malik accepted an invitation to visit Governor House Karachi, where he would deliver a special lecture on climate change for university students. He appreciated the governor’s efforts for public welfare and environmental protection.
Dr Malik said national progress depended on unity, cooperation and consensus on key issues. Both leaders expressed the hope that the new green initiatives would help build more sustainable and climate-resilient cities across Sindh.
