Scholars explored Pakistan’s pressing challenges through research and innovation, seeking practical solutions during a six-week journey of learning and national reflection

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has called on Pakistani scholars studying at leading international universities to use their knowledge, research and global experience for the country’s progress and prosperity. He made the remarks while meeting participants of the “Uraan Overseas Pakistan Summer Scholars Program” in Islamabad.
The meeting brought together young Pakistani researchers who had returned to the country under an initiative of the Ministry of Planning and Development. The scholars were taking part in a six-week internship program aimed at studying key challenges facing Pakistan and suggesting possible solutions through research and innovation.
The prime minister welcomed the decision of overseas Pakistani students to spend part of their academic journey working on issues related to their homeland. He said the participation of young people in national development was essential and praised Pakistani students around the world for bringing recognition to the country through their achievements.
Shehbaz Sharif said the youth had a central role in shaping Pakistan’s future. He encouraged the scholars to remain connected with the country and contribute their expertise towards strengthening different sectors, including the economy, technology, education and industry.
During the interaction, the prime minister briefed the scholars about the government’s reform agenda and responded to their questions regarding economic challenges and development priorities. He said Pakistan had faced serious financial difficulties in the past and had reached a stage where the risk of default had become a major concern. However, he added that timely and difficult decisions, along with emergency reforms, helped restore economic stability.
The prime minister said the government’s reform program was focused on building a stronger and more sustainable economy. He highlighted measures including the digitalization of the Federal Board of Revenue, expansion of the tax base, improvement in the ease of doing business, increased productivity, agricultural development, youth empowerment and promotion of renewable energy.
PM Shehbaz said improved enforcement measures had helped the Federal Board of Revenue collect more than Rs800 billion in additional revenue during the last fiscal year. According to him, the long-term goal of these reforms was to create a self-reliant and export-driven economy capable of generating greater opportunities for the people.
