KAMBER: The historic British-era post office in Kamber, which has served the town for more than a century, has fallen into a state of serious disrepair, prompting growing calls from residents for its immediate restoration to preserve a landmark that has long been part of the area’s history.
Located in the heart of Kamber, the building remains operational despite its deteriorating condition. Cracked walls, peeling plaster and a weakened roof have raised concerns among local residents, who fear that parts of the structure could collapse if urgent repair work is not undertaken.
For decades, the post office served as the region’s primary communication hub, long before the arrival of mobile phones, email and social media. It handled handwritten letters carrying family news, examination results, government correspondence, court notices and business documents, while also delivering money orders, parcels and other essential postal services to communities across the district.
Residents say the building represents far more than a government office. They describe it as an important symbol of Kamber’s social and cultural heritage, preserving memories of an era when handwritten letters connected families separated by long distances.
Although modern communication has transformed the way people stay in touch, the Kamber Post Office continues to provide essential postal services. Employees continue to work inside the ageing building while members of the public visit the premises daily, despite increasing concerns about its structural condition.
Residents have appealed to the relevant authorities to launch a comprehensive conservation and restoration programme to safeguard the building while preserving its original architectural features. They argue that protecting the structure is essential not only for ensuring public safety but also for conserving an important part of the town’s historical identity.
Local residents warned that continued neglect could lead to the irreversible loss of one of Kamber’s oldest public buildings and expose employees and visitors to unnecessary risks. They urged the authorities to act without delay to restore the landmark before its condition deteriorates further.
