KOLKATA: Indian cricketer Abhishek Porel, who represents Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League, has been arrested in connection with a case involving allegations of rape, criminal intimidation and other serious offences following a complaint by a medical student.
Indian media reported that police confirmed Porel’s arrest. The case was registered in June after the woman filed a complaint against the 27-year-old cricketer.
According to the complaint, the woman alleged that she had been in a relationship with Pore l for three years. She claimed that he had promised to marry her and that they had a sexual relationship on the basis of that promise. She alleged that Porel later refused to marry her and began distancing himself from her.
The woman also accused Porel of assaulting her and issuing criminal threats. Police began investigating the allegations after receiving her complaint. The Calcutta High Court later directed police to arrest Porel in connection with the case, following which he was taken into custody.
Indian media reported that Porel had previously denied the allegations. Porel is a left-handed batsman who has played for Delhi Capitals in the IPL since 2023. During the previous season, he scored 108 runs in four innings for the franchise, according to Indian media reports.
The allegations against Porel have not been proven in court. The case remains under investigation and further legal proceedings are expected.
