KARACHI: Authorities have constituted a five-member inquiry committee to investigate reported HIV cases at the Social Security Hospital in Landhi, Karachi, following the detection of 10 cases at the facility.
According to an official notification, the committee will be headed by Chief Medical Officer Dr Naila Zaheer and has been tasked with conducting a comprehensive investigation into the reported cases.
The committee will verify the number of HIV cases, confirm the identities of the affected patients and examine laboratory reports to establish the accuracy of the diagnoses.
As part of its inquiry, the committee will also investigate possible sources of infection, including the use of injections, compliance with safe injection practices and the use of disposable syringes.
The notification states that the investigation will further examine the procurement, availability and use of medicines and disposable medical supplies at the hospital to determine whether any procedural lapses may have contributed to the reported cases.
The committee has also been directed to compile complete data on the affected children and their parents. Its final report will identify any individuals found responsible, if applicable, and include recommendations to improve infection prevention, patient safety and overall hospital practices.
The inquiry was launched after 10 HIV cases were reported at the Social Security Hospital in Landhi. Officials have not yet disclosed the outcome of the investigation, which remains under way.
