TEHRAN: Iran had rejected a claim by US President Donald Trump that Tehran had asked Washington to stop further military action, calling the statement false and insisting that it had not made any request for a suspension of possible attacks.
According to Iran’s state-run Mehr News Agency, Iranian military officials said the country had not contacted the United States to seek a halt to military operations or appeal for a reduction in tensions. They described Trump’s statement as “a new lie” and said Iran’s armed forces remained prepared to respond to any escalation.
The officials said Iran’s defence systems were on high alert and warned that any military action against the country would receive what they described as a firm and proportionate response. Their comments reflected Tehran’s continued effort to project strength amid growing uncertainty over the possibility of further confrontation with Washington.
The dispute had emerged as relations between the two countries remained deeply strained, with officials on both sides exchanging strong statements over military threats and diplomatic efforts. The latest disagreement added another layer of tension to an already fragile situation in the region.
Over the weekend, Trump had said he postponed a planned major strike on Iran. In a statement shared on social media, he claimed that the decision followed requests from Iran and several regional countries. He said the pause in military action would depend on whether a quick agreement could be reached, adding that Israel had also agreed to delay the planned operation.
Iran’s response directly contradicted Trump’s version of events and highlighted the sharply different accounts being presented by the two sides. While Washington suggested that diplomatic pressure had influenced Tehran’s position, Iranian officials insisted that no such communication had taken place.
The exchange came at a time when tensions across the Middle East had remained high.
