TEHRAN: Iran has set out six conditions for the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, saying the strategic waterway would not be reopened unless the United States changed what Tehran described as its hostile policy towards Iran.
Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, said Washington would first have to provide assurances that it would never threaten Iran, regardless of the language or circumstances involved. He also said the United States would have to respect the dignity of the Iranian people.
Zolghadr said Iran’s second condition was an end to what Tehran described as wars and aggression against Iran and its allies in Lebanon, Palestine, Yemen and Iraq. He said the demand covered what Iran regarded as continued military action and pressure against its regional partners.
The third condition called for an end to the naval blockade of Iran and the withdrawal of US forces from areas surrounding the country. Tehran has repeatedly opposed the deployment of foreign military forces in the region, particularly around its territory.
Iran’s fourth demand was full compensation for damage that Tehran said it had suffered during the war. Zolghadr did not provide details of the amount or mechanism through which Iran expected compensation to be paid.
The fifth condition called for the lifting of sanctions that Iran described as unjust and illegal. Tehran has long argued that US sanctions have imposed significant economic pressure on the Iranian population and restricted the country’s access to international markets.
Zolghadr said Iran’s Supreme National Security Council would not retreat from its position, whether the dispute was ultimately resolved through military confrontation or negotiations.
