ISLAMABAD: Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni arrived in Pakistan with a focus on accelerating the implementation of agreements reached between the two neighbouring countries and further strengthening bilateral relations.
Speaking to media after his arrival, Momeni said his visit was aimed at reviewing progress on commitments made during the recent visit of the Iranian president to Pakistan. He said several decisions had been taken during that visit, but some areas still required practical steps for full implementation.
The Iranian minister said improving relations between Pakistan and Iran remained a key objective of his visit. He highlighted the importance of expanding economic cooperation and increasing trade between the two countries.
Momeni said Pakistan and Iran had agreed to raise bilateral trade to an initial target of $10 billion. He noted that current trade volume stood at around $3 billion, adding that achieving the ambitious target would require improvements in infrastructure, border facilities and trade mechanisms.
He said a substantial increase in commercial activity would be needed to reach the agreed goal. According to him, the movement of around 2,000 trucks daily across the border would be required to support the expansion of trade between the two countries.
The Iranian minister pointed out that current cross-border trade traffic was operating at only about 20 per cent of the level required to meet the target. He stressed that both sides would have to take additional measures in economic and related sectors to remove existing obstacles and enhance connectivity.
The visit came as Pakistan and Iran continued efforts to deepen economic and diplomatic engagement, with both countries seeking to improve border management, trade links and regional cooperation.
