ISLAMABAD: Defence Minister Khawaja Asif rejected remarks made by India’s defence minister on Kashmir, saying political statements and propaganda could not alter what he described as internationally recognized legal realities surrounding the disputed territory.
In a statement issued on Monday, Asif said Pakistan categorically rejected the Indian minister’s comments and termed them another attempt to misrepresent established facts. He said such statements could not change the disputed status of Indian-administered Kashmir, which remained an internationally recognized issue requiring a peaceful resolution.
The defence minister said the future of Kashmir should be decided in accordance with relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions and the wishes and aspirations of the Kashmiri people. He stressed that inflammatory statements and hostile rhetoric would not help promote peace, stability and dialogue in the region.
Asif said lasting peace in South Asia required addressing longstanding disputes through diplomatic and peaceful means. He added that efforts to create tension through political narratives would only complicate regional challenges and affect prospects for stability.
The defence minister also rejected allegations made by India against Pakistan, saying they lacked credibility. He accused New Delhi of ignoring what he described as its own record of actions that had contributed to regional instability. He further alleged that India’s policies had created security challenges in South Asia.
Asif claimed that the recent remarks by the Indian leadership were aimed at diverting attention from internal political pressures facing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government. He said attempts to shift focus through external issues would not change the realities on the ground.
