KARACHI: The Consulate-General of Japan in Karachi, in collaboration with the Tokyo Foundation, has donated 164 books to Mehran University of Engineering and Technology (MUET) under the READ JAPAN Project, an initiative aimed at promoting greater understanding of Japan through academic and cultural exchange.
The book handover ceremony was held at MUET on Wednesday, where Acting Consul General of Japan in Karachi, Tamura Takahiro, officially presented the collection on behalf of the Tokyo Foundation. The donated books cover a broad range of subjects related to Japan, including its history, culture, politics, economy, society and international relations.
Speaking at the ceremony, Acting Consul General Tamura said academic and cultural exchanges played an important role in strengthening the longstanding friendship between Japan and Pakistan. He expressed hope that the collection would serve as a valuable resource for students, researchers, academics and opinion leaders interested in gaining a deeper understanding of Japan.
MUET Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Tauha Hussain Ali highlighted the university’s long-standing relationship with Japan, recalling that the institution had received pioneering technical equipment from Japan during its formative years. He also noted MUET’s participation in Japanese academic exchange programmes, including JENESYS and SAKURA, which have provided opportunities for students and faculty to strengthen educational links between the two countries.
The vice chancellor thanked the Consulate-General of Japan in Karachi and the Tokyo Foundation for the donation, describing it as another milestone in enhancing educational cooperation and cultural ties between Japan and MUET.
The READ JAPAN Project, supported financially by the Nippon Foundation, has been donating English-language books to universities, libraries and research institutions around the world since 2008. The programme aims to promote knowledge sharing and cultural diplomacy by providing high-quality literature on Japan to educational institutions worldwide.
University officials said the newly donated collection would be added to the university library, where it would be available to students, faculty members and researchers, further enriching academic resources and encouraging international learning.
