TOKYO: A 32-year-old Japanese woman has been arrested after allegedly placing more than 2,000 online orders worth billions of yen and repeatedly cancelling them, reportedly as a way of relieving stress.
Tokyo police arrested the woman, identified by Japanese media as Mayo Yoshida, after she allegedly used fake names and around 230 fictitious accounts to place orders through the online store of Japanese anime and publishing company Shueisha.
According to Japanese media reports, Yoshida ordered merchandise linked to popular anime series including Naruto and One Piece, with the total value of the orders reportedly reaching about 4.3bn yen, equivalent to around $27m or more than Rs7.5bn.
She reportedly selected cash on delivery as the payment method for the orders. When parcels arrived at her address, she allegedly refused to accept the goods or pay for them. In some cases, she reportedly cancelled the orders before they were dispatched.
The repeated cancellations and failed deliveries allegedly caused the company significant financial losses, particularly through courier and delivery charges. Japanese media reported that the company incurred losses of about $47,500 as a result of the activity.
The case has drawn attention because of the extraordinary scale of the orders and the number of accounts allegedly used by the woman.
Police are investigating the circumstances behind the alleged activity, including her motive for placing and cancelling such a large number of orders.
The case also highlights the costs online retailers can face when fraudulent or deliberately abandoned cash-on-delivery orders generate repeated delivery and return expenses.
