MEHAR: Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (JUI) leaders and workers held a protest march in Mehar against the alleged arrest and mistreatment of party worker Parvez Ahmed Kandhro by police.
The rally, led by JUI leaders Hafiz Izhar-ul-Haq Siddiqui, Maulana Masood Ahmed Panhwar, Maulana Mukhtiar Ahmed, Abdul Rauf Brohi, Maulana Abdul Fattah, Muhammad Haroon Chandio and Pir Ghulam Mustafa, began at the bypass and ended at the National Press Club. The protesters chanted slogans against Mehar police and DSP Khalil Ahmed Baledi.
The JUI leaders alleged that about a week earlier, the DSP, accompanied by a large police contingent, raided Saban Bilharo village and arrested Kandhro. They claimed he was moved between different police stations and allegedly subjected to torture during seven days in detention.
The leaders said no case had been registered against Kandhro and alleged that he was not involved in any dispute or criminal activity. They accused police of withholding information about his whereabouts when they repeatedly sought details of his detention.
The JUI leaders accused Mehar police of failing to take effective action against alleged criminal activity, including drug dealing and gambling, while targeting party workers without justification. They condemned what they described as an abuse of police authority.
They called for law and order to be restored in Mehar and across Dadu district and demanded action against those responsible for the alleged mistreatment of Kandhro.
The protesters warned that they would intensify their campaign if their demands were not met. They said a sit-in would be held outside the SSP Dadu office and the protest movement would be expanded across the district.
