KARACHI: Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) has clarified that reports of a strong gas smell from different parts of Karachi were caused by the testing of a newly installed pipeline on Abu Al Hassan Isphahani Road.
According to an SSGC spokesperson, the new pipeline was tested a day earlier, during which a higher-than-required quantity of an odorising substance was added to the gas. The chemical is used to give natural gas a distinctive smell so that potential leaks can be detected.
The spokesperson said the unusual concentration of the odorising substance resulted in complaints from residents in several areas who reported smelling gas and feared possible leakage.
However, SSGC said all system pressure levels were normal and no actual gas leakage had been detected.
The company clarified that the smell was solely the result of the additional odorising chemical used during the pipeline testing process and did not indicate a gas leak in the network.
SSGC urged consumers not to panic and said residents could continue their routine activities normally.
The clarification came after reports of a strong gas smell in various parts of Karachi prompted concern among residents and led to complaints to the gas utility.
