KARACHI: Karachi mayor Murtaza Wahab inaugurated Khatm-e-Nabuwwat Chowk in the Saddar area, saying civic projects should preserve the city’s heritage while contributing to its development.
Deputy mayor Salman Abdullah Murad and members of the City Council attended the ceremony. Wahab said the proposal for establishing the square had been presented to him and he had immediately supported the idea. “Our effort is to carry out work in the city that will also be remembered by future generations,” he said.
Wahab said the new public space was part of broader efforts to improve Karachi while also highlighting its historic, religious and cultural identity. He said development work should not be limited to roads, infrastructure and other physical improvements, but should also reflect the character and heritage of the city.
The mayor said responsibility for maintaining Khatm-e-Nabuwwat Chowk would rest with traders and businesses in the nearby Electronics Market. He stressed the importance of local participation in keeping public spaces clean and properly maintained.
The inauguration was part of the city administration’s efforts to improve public spaces in central Karachi and give greater attention to areas with historical and cultural significance.
Wahab said civic projects should serve residents while creating spaces that reflected Karachi’s heritage. He said the city’s development programme would continue alongside efforts to strengthen its cultural and historical identity.
