SUKKUR: Khairpur Teaching Hospital has reviewed its ongoing efforts to strengthen HIV prevention, screening, treatment and public awareness, with health officials emphasising the need for closer coordination and stricter infection control measures to curb the spread of the disease.
The review meeting was chaired by Chairman of the Teaching Civil Hospital Board Khairpur, Professor Dr Javed Ahmed Phulpoto, and attended by Medical Superintendent Dr Rafiq Ahmed Mangi, Dr Kamran Shahani, senior doctors and officials from various hospital departments.
During the meeting, departmental representatives presented detailed briefings on HIV screening and diagnostic services, treatment facilities, patient management, awareness campaigns and preventive measures currently being implemented at the hospital. Participants also discussed challenges and proposed recommendations to further improve service delivery.
Doctors recommended strengthening laboratory facilities, enhancing patient follow-up systems, expanding community awareness campaigns and adopting more effective preventive strategies to reduce new HIV infections.
Addressing the participants, Professor Dr Javed Ahmed Phulpoto described HIV as a serious but preventable disease, stressing that controlling its spread required a coordinated effort by healthcare professionals, government institutions and the wider community.
He directed hospital authorities to ensure timely screening, diagnosis and treatment of every suspected HIV patient. He also instructed staff to strictly follow infection prevention protocols, maintain safe blood transfusion practices, ensure proper sterilisation of medical equipment and intensify public education campaigns on HIV prevention.
Professor Phulpoto said there would be no tolerance for negligence in matters related to HIV prevention or patient care. He emphasised that all patients should receive timely, quality and non-discriminatory healthcare services regardless of their background.
The meeting concluded with a departmental performance review, after which officials issued recommendations and future directives aimed at strengthening HIV prevention, improving patient care and enhancing the hospital’s overall response to the disease.
