LAHORE: Lahore was hit by six hours of torrential rain, leaving large parts of the city submerged, disrupting traffic and causing fatalities as floodwaters inundated roads, underpasses and residential areas.
The DHA and Harbanspura underpasses were flooded and closed to traffic, while rainwater entered homes in Tajpura and neighbourhoods near the airport. Several vehicles were submerged and many motorcycles broke down in the floodwater.
Two brothers were killed after their motorcycle reportedly skidded on Ferozepur Road and crashed into a utility pole. Four other people were injured in separate incidents involving roof collapses during the storm.
After the rain subsided, the managing director of the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) said all major underpasses had been cleared of water. However, the heavy rainfall also affected 99 electricity feeders, with restoration work continuing. In an unusual scene, a resident was seen paddling a small boat through floodwaters in Lahore’s Defence area.
Elsewhere in Punjab, Gujranwala experienced heavy rain for a third consecutive day, prompting authorities to bring in drainage machinery from Lahore. Shakargarh also recorded another day of intense rainfall, with floodwater entering low-lying villages near the Bain and Basantar streams.
In Mandi Bahauddin, officials warned that hundreds of acres of standing rice and fodder crops could be damaged by the persistent rain.
Authorities also warned of a low to medium-level flood surge in the Chenab River. Water levels at Trimmu Barrage have begun to rise, while officials in Sargodha said as many as 41 villages near Talibwala could be affected if river levels continue to increase.
