HYDERABAD: Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) Chairman Dr Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui has accused the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) of dividing Sindh along ethnic rather than urban-rural lines, while renewing his party’s demands for greater political representation and local government reforms.
Addressing a public rally in Hyderabad, Siddiqui said there were 21 cities in Sindh with large Muhajir populations. He remarked that if the party’s supporters were to march towards the Chief Minister’s House, “the matter would be decided”, adding that the MQM had always advocated mutual recognition rather than confrontation.
He described Hyderabad as a city built by the descendants of those who helped establish Pakistan, saying the Muhajir community had brought “its share of Pakistan” with it at the time of partition. He also claimed that land classified as evacuee property in Sindh rightfully belonged to his community, while alleging that they had received less than 10% of their due share.
Siddiqui said the MQM’s commitment to Pakistan and its desire for peace had been perceived as a weakness. He added that the party’s political influence extended beyond its parliamentary representation, saying, “Wherever we are, Pakistan is.”
The MQM leader urged the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N)-led federal government to pay close attention to the party’s demands, particularly the establishment of an effective local government system.
He also called for an accurate national census, arguing that fair population figures were essential for the equitable distribution of resources and political representation. Siddiqui said that if the Muhajir population were counted correctly, the demand for a separate province would no longer exist.
