KHAIRPUR: Leading intellectuals and writers have paid tribute to renowned Sindhi fiction writer Naseem Kharal, describing his short stories as modern classics that continue to influence generations of readers.
The remarks were made during the 48th death anniversary ceremony of Naseem Kharal and the 7th Short Story Conference, organised by the Naseem Kharal Memorial Committee at the Benazir Bhutto Chair Auditorium of Shah Abdul Latif University, Khairpur.
Speakers described Kharal as a master of language, a distinguished realist and one of the greatest short story writers of Sindh. They said his works, based on rural life, agrarian society and changing social realities, remain relevant even decades after their creation.
Presiding over the ceremony, renowned fiction writer Madad Ali Sindhi said that although Naseem Kharal’s literary career was short, his contribution left a lasting mark on Sindhi literature.
Chief guest Dr Yousuf Khushk, Vice Chancellor of Shah Abdul Latif University, said Kharal’s stories reflected international standards in literary technique and depth of themes.
Kharal’s son Faisal Dara Kharal said his father had an extraordinary passion for writing and remained dedicated to literature throughout his life.
Writer Taj Joyo noted that Kharal’s creative work continued to feel fresh and meaningful even after more than five decades, while poet Ayaz Gul highlighted his ability to portray both rural and urban landscapes of Sindh through memorable characters and stories.
Poet Adal Soomro said Kharal’s non-fiction writings were also highly valuable, while Mukhtiar Malik praised him as a remarkable observer of human psychology and character development.
Sindhi Language Authority Chairman Dr Sher Mehrani said every story written by Naseem Kharal reflected careful thought and dedication, while Dr Makhmoor Bukhari described his fiction as masterpieces of literary expression.
Earlier, the short story conference was chaired by Professor Sarwar Saif, with writers and literary figures including Faisal Dara Kharal, Manzoor Bedar, Qurban Mangi, Mumtaz Bukhari, Dr Aijaz Samo and Muhammad Deen Rajri attending the event.
Several writers presented their short stories during the conference. The Naseem Kharal Short Story Awards were presented to Hosh Bhatti, Taj Sarohi and Mir Taqi Abbas for securing first, second and third positions respectively.
Awards for published short story collections were given to Munawar Siraj, Dr Ahsan Danish, Dr Aijaz Samo and Mukhtiar Channa, while journalist Mushtaq Tanwari received a special award for a documentary on Naseem Kharal’s life.
The ceremony began with a Wai recitation of Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai by Sharif Abbasi. Ibrahim Kharal delivered the welcome address, Ahmed Naseem Kharal gave the vote of thanks, and the event was moderated by poet Amar Iqbal.
The conference was organised with the support of Shah Abdul Latif University, Popat Publishing House and Sindhi Adabi Sangat, Khairpur. A large number of writers, scholars, artists and literature enthusiasts attended the event.
