KARACHI: A new dual carriageway linking Korangi and Malir has been opened to traffic, with city officials saying the project will improve connectivity, reduce congestion and provide easier access to hospitals, industrial zones and residential neighborhoods.
Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab inaugurated the road connecting Mehr-un-Nisa Hospital Road with Nasir Jump and Ibrahim Hyderi Creek Road at a ceremony attended by elected representatives, city councilors and senior officials of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC).
Speaking at the event, Wahab said the 1.7-kilometre, 9.3-metre-wide road had been completed at a cost of Rs265.259 million using modern construction standards designed to ensure long-term durability.
The project also includes a 36-inch reinforced concrete storm-water drain and an 18-inch sewerage pipeline aimed at improving drainage and reducing the impact of monsoon flooding. Footpaths and kerb stones have been built on both sides of the road, while 53 streetlights have been installed to improve safety for motorists and pedestrians after dark.
Wahab said the new route would strengthen transport links between Korangi and Malir, offering an alternative corridor that is expected to ease traffic congestion and improve access to the Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT), nearby industrial estates and surrounding residential areas.
The mayor also announced that KMC would soon invite bids for development projects worth Rs13.5 billion, while work on a further Rs1 billion in schemes would begin shortly. He said improved financial management had strengthened the civic body’s revenues, allowing more funds to be directed towards public infrastructure and services.
Wahab added that several major projects were nearing completion, including what he described as Pakistan’s largest sewage treatment facility, which is expected to be inaugurated soon. He also said work was continuing on a 25-acre sports complex in Karachi’s West District.
During his speech, the mayor also commented on national political issues, reaffirming the Pakistan Peoples Party’s commitment to public service and democratic values while criticizing the federal government’s handling of recent political and administrative matters. He said the party would continue pursuing development projects across Karachi alongside its wider political agenda.
