ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast below-normal rainfall and above-normal temperatures across most parts of the country from August to October, raising concerns over water availability, agriculture and weather-related hazards.
According to the weather outlook, several areas of Punjab, Sindh and Balochistan are expected to receive less rainfall than usual during August. Below-normal rainfall is also likely in parts of north-eastern Punjab, Kashmir and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Gilgit-Baltistan, however, is expected to receive rainfall close to the seasonal average during the month.
The PMD said temperatures across the country were likely to remain above normal in August. The warmer conditions could increase irrigation requirements and pose risks to Kharif crops, particularly in areas already facing water shortages.
The department has also warned of possible water scarcity in Punjab and Sindh, which could put additional pressure on the agricultural sector and affect crop production.
In northern areas, the risks associated with accelerated glacier melting, glacial lake outburst floods and landslides are expected to remain. Authorities have also been advised to remain prepared for flash floods in mountainous areas.
The PMD warned that urban flooding could occur in major cities during periods of intense rainfall, while hill torrents and flash floods could affect mountainous streams in southern Punjab and Balochistan.
Heat intensity is expected to increase across the plains of Punjab, Sindh and Balochistan. The weather department also cautioned that strong winds, dust storms, thunderstorms and hail could damage crops and affect vulnerable communities.
The department further advised precautionary measures in low-lying and flood-affected areas because of the potential for increased dengue transmission.
The PMD said the trend of below-normal rainfall was expected to continue across most parts of Pakistan from August through October. The forecast highlights the need for careful water management, agricultural planning and preparedness for extreme weather events during the coming months.
