KARACHI: The Dr Panjwani Centre for Molecular Medicine and Drug Research (PCMD) organised a two-day workshop on “Cell Culture Techniques in Biomedical Research” at the International Centre for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS), University of Karachi, on July 21-22.
The workshop was inaugurated by Prof Dr M Raza Shah, Director of ICCBS, through an online address, while Acting Director of ICCBS Prof Dr Syed Abid Ali also spoke on the occasion.
Addressing the participants, Prof Dr Raza Shah welcomed the attendees and said the workshop would provide an opportunity to gain practical experience in cell culture methodologies while strengthening research capacity to translate laboratory techniques into academic, industrial and clinical applications.
He also highlighted the international standing of ICCBS, saying it was among Pakistan’s leading centres of excellence in chemical, biological and biochemical sciences and had served as an international hub for training researchers from different countries.
Prof Dr Syed Abid Ali stressed the importance of acquiring knowledge, noting that the Holy Quran also encouraged the pursuit of learning. He said education was a fundamental human right and a key driver of personal and societal development as it equipped individuals with critical thinking skills, promoted self-reliance and created opportunities for economic progress.
He said cell culture was one of the foundational techniques in modern biology, biotechnology and biomedical research. Whether studying disease mechanisms, testing new medicines or producing vaccines and biologics, the ability to grow and maintain cells remained essential, he added.
One of the workshop facilitators, Dr Almas Jabeen, said the training included formal lectures and laboratory sessions delivered through an integrated learning approach. The workshop covered theoretical concepts, basic principles and practical training in aseptic techniques, media preparation, cell line maintenance, subculturing, cryopreservation, contamination control and good laboratory practices to ensure laboratory safety and quality standards.
Prof Dr Asmat Salim from the Stem Cell Research Laboratory and Dr Almas Jabeen from the Immunology Laboratory served as resource persons for the workshop.
Around 50 participants from Karachi and other parts of the country attended the workshop, including graduate and postgraduate students and faculty members from biochemistry, molecular biology, biotechnology and related disciplines.
