ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Maritime Security Agency (PMSA) signed a landmark contract for the installation of a Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) on Pakistani fishing vessels, marking a significant step towards improving maritime surveillance and protecting the country’s marine resources.
The contract signing ceremony was held at the PMSA Headquarters in Karachi and was attended by Secretary Defence retired Lt Gen Muhammad Ali as the chief guest. Representatives from federal and provincial governments, along with key stakeholders from the maritime sector, were also present at the event.
The new monitoring system is expected to enhance the safety and security of fishermen by enabling better tracking and oversight of fishing vessels operating in Pakistan’s maritime zones. Officials said the initiative would also strengthen maritime domain awareness and support the sustainable management of marine resources.
The installation of the Vessel Monitoring System will provide authorities with improved capabilities to monitor fishing activities, respond more effectively to emergencies and safeguard national maritime interests. It is also aimed at ensuring greater coordination between maritime agencies and fishing communities.
The project comes as Pakistan continues efforts to modernize its maritime security framework and improve management of its coastal and offshore areas. Authorities said the initiative would contribute to a safer working environment for fishermen while supporting responsible use of marine resources.
The PMSA said the system would play an important role in strengthening surveillance capabilities and ensuring more effective protection of Pakistan’s maritime boundaries.
