KARACHI: Iqbal Market Police in District West, Karachi, had arrested suspects allegedly involved in smuggling areca nut (chalia), police said.
According to the Senior Superintendent of Police West, the suspects were attempting to smuggle the consignment in a Suzuki vehicle for supply within Karachi city.
Police officials said the operation had been carried out on the basis of confidential information, resulting in the arrest of two suspects along with the recovery of the contraband.
A total of 600 kilograms of areca nut packed in 50 sacks and cash had been recovered from the Suzuki vehicle, according to police. The vehicle used in the smuggling attempt had also been taken into custody, while further details were being gathered.
SSP West Tarik Elahi Mustoi said the arrested suspects, identified as Ahmed son of Hayat and Siraj Khan son of Shehzad Gul, along with the vehicle and recovered goods, had been handed over to customs authorities for further legal action.
