MIRPUR: Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon on Saturday accused opponents of attempting to influence voters ahead of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir elections, alleging that pre-poll rigging had taken place by sending buses into the region a day before voting.
Speaking to reporters in Mirpur, Memon claimed that buses worth Rs200 million had been deployed to mislead the public and alleged that the Election Commission had deliberately failed to act on what he described as pre-poll irregularities.
He said the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) would not allow the election process in Azad Kashmir to be manipulated and urged the Election Commission to take notice of the alleged violations before polling.
Memon also criticised the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), accusing it of ignoring what he called unconstitutional and unethical political practices. He said the outcome of the election should be decided solely by the people of Kashmir and urged federal ministers to focus on their official responsibilities instead of interfering in the electoral process.
He alleged that attempts were being made to influence voters through trucks and buses before the election, questioning whether such measures could win public support. He said the people of Mirpur were politically aware and would not be swayed by inducements.
The provincial minister said senior PPP leaders had reached Mirpur to monitor the situation and help prevent what he described as electoral manipulation. He called on the Election Commission to investigate the election activities of federal ministers and asked why no action had been taken over the alleged violations of the code of conduct.
