KHAIRPUR: Surgeons at the Gambat Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS) have successfully removed an exceptionally rare jaw bone tumor from a 22-year-old patient in a complex operation carried out free of charge, hospital officials said.
According to the hospital, the patient sought treatment at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery after developing a painless swelling in the lower jaw. He had previously visited several tertiary care hospitals but had been unable to receive definitive treatment.
Following a detailed assessment at GIMS, a biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of intraosseous low-grade polymorphous adenocarcinoma of the mandible, a rare form of cancer affecting the jaw bone.
The operation was led by consultant oral and maxillofacial surgeon Dr Mohsin Mumtaz, who performed an extensive mandibulectomy to remove the affected section of the jaw. The surgical team then reconstructed the jaw using a reconstruction plate.
