PORTUGAL: .Portuguese football star Cristiano Ronaldo has reacted to a bizarre rumour that he was due to marry his longtime partner, Georgina Rodríguez, in Madeira.
According to international media reports, rumours circulating on social media claimed that Ronaldo and Rodríguez would get married on Saturday in Funchal, the capital of Portugal’s Madeira island. Ronaldo’s family had denied the reports, but that did little to stop hundreds of fans from gathering outside the historic Sé Cathedral in the hope of seeing the football star’s wedding.
Fans waited outside the church for hours with mobile phones and cameras, only to discover that Ronaldo was not getting married there. The wedding was actually for another couple.
A woman named Nicole arrived at the cathedral to marry her fiancé, Fabião, who was already waiting inside. The unexpected crowd of fans and journalists created such confusion that the bride reportedly had difficulty entering the church.
The cathedral administration later congratulated the couple on its official Facebook page, saying the large number of journalists and tourists outside had caused considerable confusion. The church was eventually closed so the wedding ceremony could proceed.
In another post, the cathedral said it had never witnessed such a scene outside the church and that it had been extremely difficult for the bride to enter for her own wedding.
Guests at the ceremony also found the situation amusing. One guest told local media that they felt like celebrities because of the sudden attention.
Another guest questioned how people could have believed Ronaldo would get married at the venue without security arrangements.
Ronaldo himself eventually joined in the joke. In a comment on an Instagram post about the unusual incident, the footballer responded with laughing-with-tears emojis.
The episode left Ronaldo’s fans disappointed but turned an otherwise ordinary wedding in Funchal into an unexpected media spectacle.
