ISLAMABAD: Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Memon has questioned whether Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif themselves won their seats fairly, while accusing the ruling party of rigging the recent Azad Kashmir elections.
Speaking to the media in Islamabad, Memon said the “countdown” for the federal government had begun and alleged that the PML-N had trampled on the mandate of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and the people of Azad Kashmir. He claimed that PPP leader Nayyar Hussain Bukhari had shown ballot papers bearing PML-N stamps and questioned how such ballot papers had appeared.
Memon alleged that the Azad Kashmir elections were marred by unprecedented rigging, particularly in seats reserved for migrants. He accused PML-N workers of illegally stamping ballot papers in Punjab and criticised the party for celebrating the election results instead of expressing regret over the alleged irregularities.
He said that if the PML-N had refused to acknowledge allegations of rigging in the 2024 general elections, it would be difficult for the party to accept claims of manipulation in the Azad Kashmir polls. “One theft followed by arrogance,” Memon said, alleging that the PML-N had committed electoral wrongdoing while refusing to acknowledge the accusations.
He said the PPP wanted to inform the public about what its representatives had witnessed during the elections but would not adopt what he described as the same tone used by PML-N leaders. Memon alleged that on July 27, Chaudhry Azhar was involved in ballot stamping while PML-N workers continued what he described as electoral malpractice. He said the PPP had repeatedly raised its concerns with the Election Commission on polling day.
He also criticised the Election Commission’s explanation regarding weather conditions, saying the weather had been clear and sunny on the day in question. Memon’s remarks came amid continuing political tensions over the conduct and results of the Azad Kashmir elections, with opposition parties demanding explanations over alleged irregularities and the electoral process.
