KARACHI: The Sindh cabinet has approved the imposition of toll tax on heavy and commercial vehicles using the 135-kilometre Mehran Highway. The decision was taken during a provincial cabinet meeting chaired by Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah.
Officials briefed the meeting that the project to dualise the Mehran Highway was under way at an estimated cost of Rs41 billion. Once operational expenses are deducted, the toll system is expected to generate around Rs1.48 billion in net annual revenue. The cabinet also approved different toll rates based on the category and type of vehicle using the highway.
The toll will apply specifically to heavy and commercial vehicles, while rates will vary according to the vehicle classification. The Mehran Highway is being upgraded as part of efforts to improve road connectivity and facilitate commercial traffic. The provincial government expects the toll revenue to contribute towards the road’s operational and maintenance costs.
