KARACHI: Sindh Governor Syed Muhammad Nehal Hashmi on Thursday inaugurated the third three-day Healthcare Expo and Conference in Karachi, calling for stronger collaboration across the health sector and greater emphasis on preventive healthcare, hygiene and affordable medical services.
The event was attended by consuls general, healthcare professionals, medical experts and other guests from the health sector.
Addressing the gathering as chief guest, the governor said continuous coordination and cooperation were essential for improving healthcare services. He stressed that cleanliness and preventive care remained the most effective ways to reduce the burden of disease, adding that strict hygiene standards should be maintained at every stage of medical treatment, including surgeries and hospital care.
He said healthcare should be regarded as a public service rather than a commercial enterprise, warning that treating it solely as a business weakened the principles of a welfare state. He added that it was the responsibility of the state to ensure citizens had access to quality, affordable and accessible healthcare.
The governor welcomed the revival of the Health Facility Program, describing it as part of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s public welfare agenda. He also said the health card initiative, first introduced under a Pakistan Muslim League-N government, had been reactivated by the current administration.
Highlighting the importance of medical education, Hashmi said the state invested heavily in training doctors, engineers and other professionals and urged graduates to serve the nation with dedication. He said medical practice should be viewed as a service to humanity.
