KARACHI: The Sindh government has advised the University of Karachi to postpone its 662nd Syndicate meeting, scheduled for 27 July, arguing that key long-term decisions should be taken under the leadership of the institution’s next permanent vice-chancellor.
According to an official letter issued by the Sindh Higher Education Department on 20 July 2026, the meeting is due to take place on the final day of the tenure of Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Khalid Mahmood Iraqi.
The government said the meeting’s agenda includes significant administrative, financial and policy matters, including selection board recommendations, appointments, service-related issues and financial approvals. It argued that decisions on such matters would have long-term legal, financial and administrative implications for the university and should therefore be considered by the incoming vice-chancellor.
The letter noted that Karachi University is currently facing a range of administrative and financial challenges, adding that making major decisions on the outgoing vice-chancellor’s final day in office would not be in the institution’s best interests.
It further stated that, in the interest of institutional continuity, good governance and administrative transparency, the agenda should be reviewed once a new permanent vice-chancellor has assumed office, as that individual would ultimately be responsible for implementing, overseeing and being accountable for the decisions.
The Sindh government has therefore recommended postponing the 27 July syndicate meeting until the appointment and assumption of office of the new permanent vice-chancellor, so that the proposed decisions can be considered under the new administration.
Copies of the official letter were also sent to the Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister of Sindh, the Chief Secretary, all members of the University of Karachi Syndicate, the Private Secretary to the Minister for Universities and Boards, and the Secretary of the Universities and Boards Department.
If the recommendation is accepted, consideration of the selection board’s recommendations, new appointments, financial approvals and other major administrative matters is expected to be delayed until the new vice-chancellor takes office.
