BHIT SHAH: Sindh Governor Syed Muhammad Nihal Hashmi formally inaugurated the three-day 283rd annual Urs celebrations of the revered Sufi saint and poet Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai, paying tribute to his enduring legacy of peace, tolerance and humanity.
The governor visited the saint’s shrine, laid a floral wreath, offered prayers and prayed for Pakistan’s peace, stability, prosperity, national unity and the well-being of the Muslim world.
Hashmi said Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai’s teachings continue to inspire values of love, peace, tolerance, brotherhood, compassion and mutual respect. He described the Sufi poet’s philosophy as a defining symbol of Sindh’s civilization, culture, spirituality and rich mystical traditions.
He said Bhittai’s universal message remains relevant today, encouraging harmony, social cohesion and national unity at a time when such values are needed more than ever. The governor stressed the importance of introducing younger generations to the saint’s teachings, poetry and spiritual heritage to preserve Pakistan’s cultural identity.
Hashmi said that embracing Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai’s principles could help build a more peaceful, united and prosperous Pakistan. He added that the annual Urs is not only a religious and cultural gathering but also a celebration of the country’s spiritual heritage and centuries-old Sufi traditions.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by public representatives, religious scholars, devotees, literary and cultural figures, government officials and visitors from across the country.
Speaking to the media, the governor said Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai’s message transcends religion, ethnicity and social background, promoting love and humanity for all. He described Shah Jo Risalo, the poet’s celebrated collection of verse, as one of Sindh’s greatest intellectual and spiritual treasures and called for it to be translated into more languages so that people around the world could better understand Bhittai’s philosophy.
Hashmi said that while conflicts had shaped much of history, Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai had consistently preached peace, compassion and coexistence. He added that Pakistan, and Sindh in particular, should be recognised globally for its traditions of tolerance and harmony.
The governor said it was a privilege to visit the shrine and noted that people from different faiths attending the Urs reflected the saint’s enduring message of interfaith harmony, peace and universal brotherhood. He added that Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai’s teachings continue to offer a powerful antidote to hatred and division while promoting the values of humanity and coexistence.
