VICTORIA, BRITISH COLUMBIA: A Porter Airlines flight from Victoria to Toronto was cancelled after a young child refused to sit in their seat and fasten their seat belt before take-off.
Flight PD444 had left the terminal and was preparing for departure when cabin crew noticed the child standing on their seat. Flight attendants and the child’s parents spent considerable time trying to persuade the child to sit down and fasten the seat belt, but the child continued to resist.
Under aviation safety rules, passengers must remain seated and properly secured when required, meaning the aircraft could not safely take off while the situation remained unresolved. Porter Airlines said the aircraft was returned to the terminal because of the unsafe situation and the family involved was removed from the plane.
Once the aircraft returned to the gate, additional time was required to remove the family, retrieve their luggage and complete the necessary travel and security procedures. The process continued beyond 12.30am. Victoria International Airport’s main runway closes every night at 12.30am, leaving the aircraft unable to depart that night.
The cancellation meant the remaining passengers had to spend the night in Victoria. Porter Airlines apologised to passengers for the disruption and rebooked them on alternative flights the following day.
