LAHORE: Squash legend Jahangir Khan has urged young players to understand that success cannot be achieved through shortcuts and requires sustained hard work and dedication.
Speaking to the media in Lahore, Khan said Pakistan had no shortage of sporting talent but stressed the need to guide children properly and develop their commitment to the sport.
“Success does not come through shortcuts. You have to work hard,” he said, warning that the way squash was currently being managed could lead to negligence in developing young talent. Khan made the remarks after inaugurating three newly constructed squash courts at the Sports Department’s squash complex in Lahore. He formally opened the facility by cutting a ribbon and playing the first shot.
Director General Sports Punjab Muhammad Tariq was also present at the inauguration. Khan described the new squash complex as a gift for Lahore and said facilities of this standard were rare around the world. He said Pakistan had considerable potential in squash and that providing young players with modern facilities could help the country develop the next generation of champions.
The former world champion also stressed the importance of encouraging children to remain committed to training and understand that sporting success was the result of discipline, patience and consistent effort. The new courts are expected to provide players in Lahore with improved facilities for training and competition and support the development of squash at the grassroots level.
