SUKKUR: The closing ceremony of World Breastfeeding Week 2026 was held on 7 August at the Sindh Institute of Child Health and Neonatology (SICHN), Children’s Hospital Sukkur, with health professionals stressing the importance of breastfeeding for newborn health, survival and healthy development.
Speakers highlighted the importance of supporting and guiding breastfeeding mothers through both healthcare services and community-level programs.
The session was led by Dr Iqrar Ali, assistant professor of neonatology, and Dr Mansoor Ahmed. Dr Samina Naz, assistant professor of paediatrics, Dr Maimoona, staff nurse Jannat and nutrition specialist Zainab delivered educational and awareness presentations.
Dr Farukh Imtiaz Bhanbhro said breast milk was the natural and best food for newborns. He stressed the importance of exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months, saying it could help reduce illnesses such as diarrhoea and pneumonia, support immunity and promote healthy growth.
He also highlighted health benefits for mothers associated with breastfeeding and said it had been linked with a lower risk of breast and ovarian cancers.
The director said Sindh health minister Dr Azra Fazal Pechuho was giving particular attention to improving maternal and child health, while the health department was working to strengthen awareness, facilities and support for mothers and children.
Speakers urged families and healthcare providers to ensure that newborns are breastfed soon after birth and receive only breast milk for the first six months, while mothers should be provided with appropriate guidance and support at healthcare facilities and within communities.
Certificates of appreciation were presented to doctors, nursing staff and other employees who played a prominent role in awareness, education and advocacy activities during World Breastfeeding Week.
The ceremony aimed to promote breastfeeding, particularly exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months, improve newborn health and survival, and reinforce the commitment to giving every child a healthy start in life. Participants also appreciated the services provided by the institution.
