The remarks triggered strong reactions in India, where ruling party representatives from the Bharatiya Janata Party gave a cautious response, saying they had seen reports of the comments but avoided direct escalation.
Opposition leaders from the Indian National Congress criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government, arguing that it had failed to respond firmly to foreign criticism and was projecting weakness on the global stage.
