WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump on Monday criticized Iran for refusing to engage in direct negotiations with Washington, claiming Tehran was only willing to communicate through Oman while sending contradictory signals about diplomacy.
In a statement posted on social media, Trump accused Iranian officials of changing their position on talks, saying they had initially shown interest in holding meetings before later denying that negotiations were taking place.
Trump said discussions had previously begun with progress on several issues, but Iranian officials later claimed publicly that no direct dialogue was underway and that contacts were being handled only through Oman. He described the approach as inconsistent and questioned Tehran’s commitment to negotiations.
The US president also renewed his warnings over the strategic Strait of Hormuz, saying Iran had repeatedly claimed it would control the waterway on its own. Trump asserted that the US Navy maintained control over the key maritime route and said Washington would continue monitoring developments in the region.
He further claimed that supplies would not reach Iran without US approval unless Tehran either agreed to restrictions on its weapons program or reached an agreement with Washington. His remarks reflected the administration’s continued pressure campaign against Iran over its nuclear activities.
Iran has previously maintained that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes and has rejected pressure over its sovereign rights. The latest comments came amid continued diplomatic uncertainty and regional tensions, with Oman playing a role as a channel for communication between the United States and Iran.
