WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump said Washington would continue launching what he described as “very strong” military strikes against Iran, declaring that the United States’ goal was to prevail in the escalating conflict.
Speaking to reporters after a cabinet meeting at Camp David in Maryland, Trump said American forces were making progress while attempting to exercise restraint where possible. He claimed Iran had suffered extensive damage from the ongoing military campaign and insisted that the United States was determined to achieve victory.
Trump said Washington would not allow Iran to develop a nuclear weapon, describing the issue as a clear and non-negotiable objective. He said US operations would continue and could intensify until Tehran reached a point where it could no longer withstand the pressure being applied by American forces.
The US president rejected claims that Iran remained in a strong strategic position, arguing that the country’s military capabilities had been significantly weakened. He accused the Iranian leadership of dishonesty and said dealing with Tehran had been an extremely difficult experience.
Comparing the conflict with previous US military engagements in Vietnam and Afghanistan, Trump said the current confrontation had lasted only five months. He claimed that, during this period, American operations had severely affected Iran’s military strength and reduced its ability to respond.
Trump also expressed doubts over the possibility of diplomatic progress, saying he no longer trusted Iranian officials because he believed they had not been truthful during negotiations. He said previous discussions had failed to produce meaningful results and accused Tehran of using talks as a tactic rather than pursuing a genuine agreement.
The president said he had been waiting for an update from his special envoy, Steve Witkoff, but instead received a call from Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth informing him that Iran had launched five missiles at a US military base in Jordan.
Trump’s remarks came as tensions between Washington and Tehran continued to rise, with military action and diplomatic efforts unfolding simultaneously. His comments signaled that the United States intended to maintain its campaign against Iran while keeping pressure on the Iranian leadership over nuclear concerns and regional security issues.
The escalating confrontation has raised concerns among international observers about the risk of a wider regional conflict, as both sides continue to exchange threats and military actions.
